Family Holiday Hosting Image - Chicago IL - Aelite Chimney SpecialtiesTime flies when you are busy, and the season of fall can be of the busiest times of the year. It may be hard to believe, but the holidays are just around the corner. If you have not had time to get your home ready for visits from friends and family during the holidays, you need to get started as soon as possible. One of the most important things you should do is make sure your fireplace and chimney are working efficiently and safely. Many fire safety organizations, including the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA), recommend that you have your chimney professionally swept and inspected before you light the first fire of the season. Aelite Chimney Specialties can help you get your fireplace ready before the holidays, and you can trust us to make sure everything is safe because we have been taking care of chimneys in the Chicago area for over 15 years. We would like to tell you what to expect from our professional chimney maintenance services.

Chimney Sweeping

Avoiding chimney fires is one of the most important reasons why you need to have your chimney professionally swept at least once a year. You need this maintenance service to have the creosote removed from the inside of your chimney. Creosote is produced naturally during the combustion process of burning wood, and it is so flammable that the CSIA has named it as a leading cause of chimney fires. When Aelite Chimney Specialties arrives to your home to sweep your chimney, we begin by protecting your home from soot and dirt by laying down drop cloths and sealing off the area around your chimney. To make sure that we remove all of the creosote from your chimney, we use special rotating brushes and rods to scrub the entire inside of your chimney. After about an hour, your chimney will be less of a chimney fire hazard.

Chimney Inspection

You need to have your chimney professionally inspected annually to make sure there is no damage or other problems that could lead to hazardous situations. We check to see if anything is blocking your flue and can remove any debris that could force toxic gases like carbon monoxide back into your home. We also look for damage to parts of the chimney, including the liner, that could also lead to carbon monoxide leaks. The exterior of your chimney is also inspected to check for any masonry damage that could allow water penetration or could jeopardize the structure of your chimney. If our CSIA-certified chimney technicians find any problems, we will provide you with a written estimate of the repairs that are needed to make your chimney safe to use.

Why Hiring a CSIA-Certified Chimney Sweep Is Important

Your chimney and fireplace system need regular maintenance in order to work efficiently and safely, and to be sure these maintenance services are done correctly, it is important to hire a chimney sweep who has been trained and certified by the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA). Without this certification, a chimney sweep may not clean and inspect your chimney correctly, which means your chimney could still have hidden hazards after it has been swept and inspected. Aelite Chimney Specialties only hires CSIA-certified chimney sweeps because we know how important this certification is. We would like to tell you more about CSIA certification and why it is so essential for the best professional chimney services.

The non-profit organization provides training sessions at its headquarters, the CSIA Technology Center in Indiana, as well as at various locations across the country. Chimney sweeps can also take these sessions online. At the end of the training sessions, the sweep must pass two exams based on the texts used in training. After successful completion of these exams, the sweep must pay his annual fees and sign the CSIA Code of Ethics.

What is covered in the training sessions?

Chimney sweeps learn how to maintain and repair chimneys attached to all types of fuel-burning appliances and how to install and service these heating appliances. They also are taught about the different codes and standards for chimneys from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the International Residential Codes (IRC). Chimney sweeps will learn how to repair common chimney performance problems, including improving chimney draft. Safety practices are also reinforced during this training.

What does the CSIA Code of Ethics include?

When chimney sweeps sign this code, they promise to follow all chimney and venting safety practices and techniques recommended by the CSIA as well as to continue their education by keeping up with the latest chimney industry technology. You can trust a CSIA-certified chimney sweep to comply with all applicable building and fire safety codes as well as to treat you honestly and fairly as a customer. These sweeps promise to never engage in deceptive business practices. The CSIA-certified chimney sweeps at Aelite Chimney Specialties will always be truthful with you about the condition of your chimney and the repairs it needs to work safely.

Pre-Fall Chimney Insepction - Chicago IL - Aelite

Why is it so important to have my chimney swept and inspected before lighting the first fire for the year?

The main reason the CSIA, the NFPA, and other fire safety organizations make this recommendation has to do with the dangers of creosote. Formed naturally during the condensation process of burning wood, creosote is the residue of the byproducts of combustion, and it sticks to the walls of your chimney and accumulates into deposits. Creosote is highly flammable and is the leading cause of chimney fires. When Aelite Chimney Specialties sweeps your chimney, we will get rid of all of the creosote accumulations from the inside of your chimney to protect you from the possibility of a devastating chimney fire. We will also look for any possible damage to your chimney, like a blockage or loose bricks, that could also cause your chimney to be unsafe to use. Safety is our top priority when performing these services.

What can I expect from a chimney sweeping and inspection from Aelite Chimney Specialties?

Before we start to sweep your chimney, we will put down drop cloths around the area surrounding your fireplace and seal off the area around your chimney to keep your home clean. We will then use special tools like rotating brushes, rods, and vacuums to clean your chimney from bottom to top. Before we finish, we will inspect the easily accessible parts of your fireplace and chimney to make sure you do not need any necessary repairs before you can use your chimney.

Do not wait until fall to schedule your chimney sweeping appointment! Contact Aelite Chimney Specialties today to arrange this important chimney maintenance task.

All About Chimney Inspections

You may know that the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) recommends that you have your chimney swept and inspected once a year, but do you know that there are three levels of chimney inspections? Depending on your situation and the condition of your fireplace and chimney system, each of these levels serves to ensure your chimney and venting components are functioning properly and safely. Our CSIA-certified chimney sweeps at Aelite Chimney Specialties are trained and experienced in cleaning and inspecting all sorts of chimneys. We are often asked exactly what a chimney inspection entails, and we would like to share this information with you.

Learning about Chimney Inspections - Chicago IL

Why do I need an annual chimney inspection?

This yearly chimney checkup is essential in preventing hazardous situations. When Aelite Chimney Specialties performs annual chimney inspections, our CSIA-certified chimney sweeps looks for creosote deposits and other blockages of your chimney. We then will sweep your chimney to clean out any debris.

What are the three levels of chimney inspections?

According to the CSIA, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) adopted three specific levels of chimney inspections into code NFPA 211, the standard for chimneys, fireplaces, vents, and solid fuel burning appliances. The three levels are as follows:

  • Level 1: The most common of the chimney inspection levels, a Level 1 inspection is simply a visual check of your fireplace and chimney that does not involve using special tools. Our chimney sweeps will look for damage, obstructions, creosote buildup and soot.
  • Level 2: You will need a Level 2 inspection if you have made any changes to your chimney and venting system like installing a new heating appliance. This level of inspection is also required when you buy a new home and if you have experienced an earthquake or a dramatic weather event like a hurricane or a tornado. Our certified chimney sweeps will do a visual chimney check as well as examine the roof, attic, and crawl space and use special tools, which include a video scanner.
  • Level 3: Resembling a demolition job, a Level 3 chimney inspection may involve tearing down and rebuilding the walls of your chimney. If you have experienced a chimney fire, this level of inspection is a necessity.

What exactly do you look for when you perform a Level 1 inspection?

The main thing our sweeps at Aelite Chimney Specialties will examine is the condition of the walls of your chimney. They should appear smooth. Bumps, ridges, slick and bubbly surfaces, and thick, scale-like buildup all indicate creosote. We can scrape the walls with a small screwdriver to discover the exact thickness of any creosote deposits. A compound that naturally forms during the combustion and condensation processes, creosote is extremely hazardous as it is highly flammable and can ignite a serious chimney fire. We will be sure to remove all creosote deposits during the post-inspection sweeping.
