Chimney Cover Installation
Because water can enter a chimney in numerous places, there are several services and products that Aelite Chimney uses to keep water from entering and damaging your home. Before we explain how to keep water out of a chimney, you have to understand why it’s important to do so. Water can be incredibly damaging to the masonry and metal that makes up your chimney system, causing deterioration and overall degeneration. Therefore, a leaking chimney can result in structural problems for both your chimney and your home, which in turn can result in an enormous home repair bill and pose a great safety risk to you and your family.
Why Trust a Certified Sweep?
A certified chimney professional will be able to advise you about which waterproofing methods, if any, are necessary for your chimney sytem. We will inspect to make sure that your flashing —which is the metal banding that wraps around the place where your chimney and roof meet—is in good shape. We will also check that your chimney crown, chimney cap, and/or chase top are watertight and not rusted or showing wear or tear. We may also suggest that you have a waterproofing sealant professionally applied to the crown or masonry of your system.
It’s also important to have a chimney cover that’s watertight and in good condition. A chimney cover is also referred to as a “surround” and is basically a large chimney cap that covers the entire crown area of the chimney. Made of stainless steel, galvanized metal or copper and installed above your chimney’s crown, this cover will keep the elements like rain, snow and ice out of your chimney. It will also deter birds and other small animals from nesting inside your chimney, where they can produce all kinds of unpleasant noises and odors. Some of these covers come with spark arrestors designed to keep sparks inside your chimney so that they don’t disperse and catch fire to anything around your house.
